Wapsi Chinese #1 Rooster Necks
Fantastic Seller!!
Wapsi are the only
company that I know of that grade their Chinese Rooster
Necks. The #1 Quality are quite superb. Large, supple capes
in a wide range of colours. Not the miserable shrivelled
objects seen sometimes. Forget the rest, these are the best.

Chinese Rooster – economy grade
Still from Wapsi. These necks are not as
large as the #1 and you will get some mishapen necks. The
colours are still the superb Wapsi dyings. |
Genetic Capes & Saddles
We have probably the best selection of quality
genetic pelts available in Europe. We deal with a number of
breeders to bring you a range of top quality capes and saddles
in price ranges and colours that sell. We believe that a
half genetic pelt is generally much better value for money than
an Indian pelt and we stock accordingly. We pride ourselves on
the quality of the products we stock.
Quality Capes mean
better flies. Choose from our super range of pelts to meet all
your tying needs. If you're not sure what you should be looking
for, There is a short article on capes and their selection in
the main navigation bar from the home page.
David Rice has provided advice on the breeding
and selection of genetic hackle birds to several top US breeders
– We know hackle like no other wholesaler.
Metz Capes & Saddles -
we are official Metz Distributors
 |
A famous name that needs no
introduction. We are pleased to give Metz pole position in
our genetic pelt line up.
In addition to the Metz stock colours, we
have been able to arrange for Wapsi to dye some of
our special Irish colours. These have sold extremely well
during the 2000 season. Metz have also custom hatched
thousands of cream birds for us, for Autumn 2000 delivery.
We do not expect any cream product supply problems for a
significant part of the coming season. For those of you not
aware, cream/white saddles in quality are always in short
supply.
To further extend our Metz line up, you
can also have pelts stained in Picric Acid from us.
|
| Necks

Available as whole necks, half necks or
combo necks (two half necks of different colours). Custom
colours only available from us are included in our
inventory.
Grade#1 necks have a full range of
hackle from size #8 thru #24 (and often as small as #28).
They will be full and thick with long and narrow, virtually
web free hackle. The hackle will be glossy, springy and
stiff. Fiber density will be very pronounced. Coloration
will be pleasant and consistent.
Grade #2 necks
are almost identical in quality to #1’s, but may not be
quite as heavily hackled and perhaps slightly webbier. You
may also find an occasional pin feather or broken tip.
However, since out grading standard is so stringent, none of
these flaws will be significant. Selling at a considerable
reduction from #1’s, but essentially the same quality
hackle, they are great value.
Grade#3 necks may have a little
more web, broken tips or pin feathers than the #2’s but still
have top quality dry fly hackle. They may not be as heavy
hackled in the smaller hook sizes (18 and smaller) but may
be very full with premium quality hackle in the more
commonly used sizes (16 and larger). These necks make a fine
choice for the novice or commercial fly tyer. |
| Saddles

Metz saddles are always a good seller.
Again we offer colours you can‘t get elsewhere. If you like
our Chinese pelt colours, you’ll love these saddles. We also
have special picric acid dyings.
There has been a hefty increase in the
price of grizzle saddles this Autumn. Please note that this
is not of our doing. Metz is reacting to the market shortage
of quality grizzle saddles. We think that Metz grizzle still
offer excellent value for money, when compared to other
offerings out there.

David
Rice Capes
Quality genetic necks from a reputable US breeder. Limited
colour range that represents excellent value for the fly
dresser. I have a significant stock of hard to come by
genuine cree in these pelts at the time of putting the
catalogue together. Don’t be fooled by the low price on
these pelts. They will wrap small dry flies. We can supply
as half necks or combination necks for those who have this
requirement.

Shannon
Rooster Necks
A smaller breeder from the US. Shannon
knows how to finish and present a quality pelt, a lesson,
some of the other smaller breeders would do well to learn.
Nice dry fly quality hackle. Lovely flexible feathers that
will wrap tiny dry flies.Supplies of these capes are limited
and seasonal. Highly recommended. |

As seen in
January 2001 Trout and Salmon Magazine.

Picture shows Metz saddles
Picric acid has long been used
in Ireland for the dying of fly tying materials. Now no longer
widely available, due to its rather nasty habit of exploding
under the least provocation. We have managed to establish a
legal supply of this chemical and can now offer many of the
wonderful colours once produced by this method and a few new
twists as well.
There may be a lead time on
these products as it takes time to do properly and we will be
custom dying on a range of pelts (see table).
A few experimental capes were
taken to the World Cup in Ballinrobe. They got an excellent
response. These pelts are going to be "must haves" for Irish
tying material retailers.
We would advise early ordering as availability
will be subject to the appropriate "raw" pelt being available

Picric acid is poisonous, although once used
as a wound dressing! Consequently, we print a warning on the
product. In fact many dyed materials are dangerous due to the
carcinogenic nature of dyes. The warning is just to be
absolutely certain that people know what they’re handling. I
have burned dyed capes to ensure the explosive risk does not
apply to stained products. In fact they appear no more
inflammable than an untreated cape. Picric acid, even in minute
quantity, is unbelievably bitter to the taste, so you would know
if you were eating it!
|
Warning
This cape
has been stained in picric acid. We have machine rinsed the
cape at least 3 times to try and remove any residue.
However, should the cape become damp, leaching may occur,
particularly from the skin. Picric acid is HIGHLY
POISONOUS, either on the skin or if swallowed. If you
get a yellow stain on your hand from the pelt, wash
immediately. Do not use the pelt again until rinsed and
dried. Use rubber gloves to handle during this process.
Picric
acid is – 2,4,6 Tri-nitro-phenol.
This cape
is sold on the basis that you are aware of the risk and act
responsibly when handling the cape or feathers. For instance
many tyers would lick their fingers to wet tying materials
(this is inadvisable in any case as many dyes are
carcinogenic), we strongly recommend that you do not do so
when dealing with picric acid stained products.
No
liability will be accepted under any circumstances, as we
have tried our best to make you aware of the potential
risks. If you are in any doubt, do not purchase this
product. |
